For a moment, it appeared Keene State – our No. 5 team in this week’s Noontime Sports Top 10 Men’s Lacrosse Poll – was going to upset our No. 1 squad, Tufts.
However, that possibility – or thought – was dashed, as the Jumbos overcame a three-goal deficit by closing the second quarter on a 7-1 run en route to a 24-16 win over the Owls on Wednesday afternoon in Medford.
Tufts’ John Cordrey registered five points on three goals and two assists, while Austin Carbone recorded a pair of goals and assists.
Wednesday’s victory was the Jumbos’ second win of the season – this past weekend, the Powder Blue and White defeated Stevens by a score of 19-6.
Keene State jumped out to a one-goal lead after the initial quarter, thanks to a pair of goals by Tyler Reilly. Bryan Rotatori, who netted the game’s first goal, concluded the session with one assist – the helper came on Reilly’s first goal of the quarter.
Tufts’ Danny Murphy evened the score at 4-4 with 11:56 remaining in the second quarter before Keene State’s Hunter Arnold jumpstarted a three-goal run by scoring on a man-up with 10:41 left in the frame.
The Jumbos would respond, netting seven of the next eight goals to enter the break with an 11-8 advantage. Their momentum would continue in the second half, outscoring the Owls over the final two frames, 13-8.
Rotatori concluded the contest with three goals and three assists, while Reilly registered a trio of strikes.
Tufts returns to action Friday, March 10th when they host Middlebury, while Keene State is off until next Monday, March 13th when they face Nichols in Clermont, Florida.
