Our Noontime Sports Preseason New England D3 Football coverage officially begins TODAY with a look at the Salve Regina Seahawks, who will certainly be one of many teams to watch this season.

Team Name: Salve Regina University Seahawks

Noontime Sports Preseason Ranking: The Seahawks checked-in No. 9 on our preseason poll, which was posted Monday, July 31st.

2016 Season Recap: The Seahawks concluded last season by winning eight of 10 contests. And despite coming-up short in the inaugural New England Bowl game to Framingham State, the Seahawks gained a great deal of experience on both sides of the ball that should help them contend for the first-ever Commonwealth Coast Football (CCC) crown.

Key Losses: Brandon Basil (Quarterback), Sam Pascale (Running Back), Ethan Gambale (Linebacker) and Joey Farrar (Defensive Back).

Players to Watch in 2017: Danny McDermott (Quarterback), James Dawson (Running Back), Robert Askew (Running Back), Tommy Seaver (Tight End), Tyler D’Errico (Linebacker), Nathan Gonzalez (Defensive Back), John Salute (D-Line), Brandon O’Neill (D-Line), Nico Aronson (O-Line) and Connor Russo (Defensive Back).

2017 SchedulePrior to their initial CCC contest, which is scheduled for Saturday, October 14th against Nichols College, the Seahawks will look to earn some early-season momentum, beginning with a pair of home games against Worcester State (Sept. 2nd) and Montclair State (Sept. 9th). Their next two games – both on the road – could tell us a great deal about this squad before they begin league play. Two October dates to circle on your calendar: a visit from Endicott College (Saturday, Oct. 21st) and a trip to Western New England (Saturday, Oct. 28th).

Season Outlook: With a great deal of talent (and depth) back from last season’s squad, one should not overlook a Seahawks squad that certainly has potential to challenge the Golden Bears for the top spot in the CCC. All four non-conference games should prepare this unit for a successful first season of CCC football. Keep an eye on quarterback Danny McDermott and Tommy Seaver on offense – both seniors will be key for the unit’s success. On defense, expect another solid season from linebacker Tyler D’Errico. Both units did graduate some key pieces to last year’s 8-2 team, but the returners should be to step-up and continue their momentum from a year ago.

Noontime Sports Team Of The Month: Salve Regina University

salve-update

By NoontimeSports.com

For the second time this football season, Noontime Sports is pleased to announce our Team of the Month (October): Salve Regina University.

Currently 7-0 overall and 5-0 in New England Football Conference (NEFC) play, the Seahawks capped the month of October with a convincing road win over Endicott College this past weekend, winning by a score of 41-20. Quarterback Brandon Basil tossed two touchdowns in the win, halfback Sam Pascale rushed for three scores on 29 carries for 178 yards, while the defense registered one sack, one interception and four tackles for a loss.

Prior to their victory against the Gulls, Salve Regina earned wins over Curry College, Nichols College and MIT.

The Seahawks currently lead the NEFC in rushing yards (2,050) and yards per game (510.6) – they are second in total offense (3,574). Pascale and tailback James Dawson rank first (158.7) and second (97.4), respectively, in yards per game, while Basil is fourth in yards per game (216.0) and tied for fourth with 14 touchdowns (through the air).

Brandon O’Neill and John Salute are currently tied for first in the conference with three sacks – Endicott’s Craig Anderson has also registered a trio of sacks this season too.

The Seahawks return to the gridiron this weekend for an extremely important conference game as they host Western New England for a 12 p.m. kickoff. Similar to Salve Regina, the Golden Bears are undefeated.

Last season, the Golden Bears defeated the Seahawks, 28-21, to secure the NEFC crown. The Seahawks’ last victory over the Golden Bears came in 2013, thanks to a trio of touchdown passes from quarterback Steve Wilken and a pair of rushing scores by halfback Richie Edwards.
