WACBA Honor Roll: Men’s Basketball Week 11 (Jan. 29th)

Springfield College and Becker College

Men’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week: Kareem Davis (Becker College| Sr.| Lowell, Mass.): Davis continued to demonstrate why he was one of the most dynamic players in the region this past week, as he averaged 35.5 points per game in two games. The senior captain shot 60 percent from the floor, 57.1 percent from behind the arc and 86.7 percent from the free throw line. During last Tuesday’s 107-85 victory at Lesley University, Davis poured in a career-high 40 points with three steals. Facing Eastern Nazarene on Thursday, Davis became Becker’s all-time leading scorer with his 31-point outburst, passing Samuel Durodola, who concluded his career with the Blue and White last winter with 1,699 points.

Men’s Co-Player of the Week: Matt Morrow (Nichols College | So. | Leicester, Mass.): Morrow shot 68 percent from the field last week while averaging a double-double with 19.0 points and 13.5 rebounds as the Bison went 2-0 and remained atop their conference standings. Morrow collected 10 points, 14 rebounds, two assists, and two steals in a road win at Endicott College last Tuesday before filling the stat sheet with 28 points, 13 rebounds, and two assists in a win at Salve Regina on Saturday.

In a pair of games last week, Cal Connelly averaged 12.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.

Men’s Rookie of the Week: Cal Connelly (Assumption College | Fr. | Rochester, N.H.): Connelly came through for Assumption in a 1-1 week, averaging 12.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game while shooting 50 percent from the floor. The forward posted 16 points, five rebounds, one steal and one block in an 11-point win over American International College, before concluding the week with eight points, three rebounds and three assists in a loss to Saint Rose.

Chris Cardoso (Worcester State | So. | Jamaica Plain, Mass.): Cardoso averaged 16 points and 6.6 rebounds in a trio of games last week as the Lancers went 1-2 with their lone win coming against Westfield State last Thursday. The sophomore guard tallied 11 points or more in all three games with his biggest output coming against the Owls with 24 points on 8 of 14 shooting while finishing the game with seven rebounds, one assist, and one steal. For the week, Cardoso recorded 48 points, 20 rebounds, nine assists, and five steals.

Tyler Davern (Clark University | So. | Webster, Mass.): In a pair of games last week against MIT and Springfield, the sophomore forward averaged 13.5 points and 7.5 rebounds. Against MIT, Davern tallied nine points and six rebounds before netting 18 points on 8 of 14 shooting in a 61-53 setback to Springfield. Davern concluded his team’s game against the Pride one rebound short of a double-double as he collected nine caroms while tallying one steal and one block.

Andre Ruff (Fitchburg State | Jr. | Chicago, Ill.): Ruff averaged 15.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, three assists and three steals per contest over three games for the Falcons. He posted 20 points, three rebounds, one assist and two steals in a 79-77 win over Westfield State on Tuesday before adding 16 points, two boards, six assists and five steals in a 95-90 setback to Bridgewater State on Thursday. The junior concluded the week with nine points, five caroms, two assists and two steals in a 68-67 loss to Framingham State on Saturday.

Mike Rapoza (Anna Maria College | Jr. | Charlton, Mass.): In just one contest last week, the Charlton native poured in a team-high 20 points on 10 of 14 shooting, while also recording a game-high 15 rebounds, including six offensive caroms.

Austin Butler (Holy Cross | So. | Latrobe, Pa.): Butler averaged 16.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game on the week. After posting 11 points and six rebounds at Army, the sophomore totaled 22 points, three rebounds and three steals in the victory over Navy. He scored 17 of his points against the Midshipmen in the second half and received the Martin J. O’Malley Award as the MVP of Holy Cross’ Winter Homecoming game.

Matthew Kelly (Assumption College | Soph. | North Potomac, Md.): In a 1-1 week for the Hounds, Kelly averaged 21.0 points with 3.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game while shooting 57.7 percent from the floor and making 9 of 14 three-point attempts. The sophomore had 16 points and four rebounds in an 11-point win over American International College before tallying 26 points, seven assists and four steals in a tight seven-point loss to Saint Rose.

Ethan Harrell (WPI | So. | Wexford, Pa.): Harrell averaged 19 points and seven rebounds while totaling three assists, three blocks and a steal in the Engineers’ 2-0 week. After exploding for a career-high 26 points on 10-15 shooting, including 4-6 from beyond the arc, against Springfield College, the sophomore posted 12 points and a career-best nine rebounds at Wheaton College last Saturday.

Men’s Basketball Player of the Week: Kareem Davis (Becker College| Sr.| Lowell, Mass.): Davis averaged 21.7 points, 4.7 steals, 3.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game over three games last week. First, against New England College on Tuesday, he finished with 19 points and five steals. In Thursday’s 84-56 victory at Elms College, Davis poured in 32 points, shooting 50 percent from the floor and 40 percent from behind the arc. Finally, against Newbury College on Saturday, Davis finished with 14 points.

Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week: Michael Speight (Assumption College| Fr. | Morningside, Md.): Speight was solid for the Hounds in a tough three-point loss last week against Pace University. The first-year totaled 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting with three rebounds in 27 minutes of action.

Chris Cardoso (Worcester St. | So.| Jamaica Plain, Mass.): Cardoso went off for 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting, including 3-for-4 from beyond the arc in the Lancers’ loss at Fitchburg State last Saturday. The sophomore also grabbed four rebounds, dished out three assists, and recorded one steal.

Tyler Davern (Clark University | So. | Webster, Mass.): Davern put up a team-high 34 points this past week. He started with 27 points in an overtime setback to Coast Guard Academy last Wednesday, while adding eight rebounds. On Saturday, Davern put up seven points and added three steals in a setback to WPI at home.

Colin McNamara (WPI | So.| Arlington, Mass.): The sophomore notched double-digit scoring in both games last week, including a career-high 18 points against Clark University last Saturday. On Wednesday against Emerson College, McNamara netted 11 points, along with five rebounds and five assists.

Jonathan Perez (Fitchburg St.| Sr.|Lowell, Mass.): Perez averaged 17.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals per contest in a 2-0 week for the Falcons. The senior posted 19 points, seven rebounds, one assist and one steal in a 98-79 victory against MCLA last Wednesday before adding 16 points, four caroms, two assists and two steals in a 78-74 triumph over Worcester State on Saturday.

Mike Rapoza (Anna Maria College | Jr. | Charlton, Mass.): Rapoza scored 28 points against Suffolk University before netting 17 against Rivier University. He also tallied 17 rebounds, 6 blocks, 4 assists, and 2 steals last week, as well.

Men’s Player of the Week: Jehyve Floyd (Holy Cross | Sr. | Sayreville, N.J.): Floyd averaged 15.0 points and 9.0 rebounds last week in a pair of games, while hitting 85.7 percent of his field goal attempts. The senior forward led the team with a season-high 20 points and a career-best 15 rebound during the Crusaders’ 80-73 win at Loyola. Against Navy, Floyd, who got into foul trouble in the first half, scored 10 points in the second half against the Midshipmen, including two free throws with 25.7 seconds left to tie the game at 48-48.

Men’s Rookie of the Week: Michael Speight (Assumption College| Fr.|Morningside, Md.): Speight went off for a career-high 20 points with two rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot in the team’s lone game last week, which was a 78-70 loss to No. 4 Saint Anselm.


Erik Bjorn (Worcester State| Soph.| Holden, Mass.): In an exciting MASCAC clash with Salem State last Saturday, Bjorn concluded the contest with 18 points, nine rebounds (six defensive caroms) and one block. Bjorn connected on 9 of 11 field goals for a season-best 81.8 shooting percentage.

Kareem Davis (Becker College| Sr.|Lowell, Mass.): Davis had a superb effort on Saturday to lead Becker’s upset bid at Eastern Nazarene College. The senior team captain scored 28 points and shot 41 percent from behind the three-point line, all while dishing out eight assists with two steals before the Hawks fell short, 77-67. For the week, Davis averaged 16.5 points and 5.0 assists per game. Becker is back on the court on Tuesday night when they host Mitchell College at 6:00 p.m.

Matthew Kelly (Assumption College| So.| North Potomac, Md.): In Assumption’s only contest last week, Kelly was dynamic against No. Saint Anselm. He finished with 21 points, four rebounds and three assists in an eight-point loss to the Hawks.

Nicholas Tracy (Fitchburg State | Jr. | Indianapolis, Ind.): Tracy averaged 21.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, three assists, 1.5 steals and two blocks per contest over two games for the Green and Gold last week. He netted a team best 21 points, three rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in a 90-82 win over Regis College last Wednesday before adding a team-leading 22 points, six caroms, three assists, one steal and two blocks in a 73-71 setback to Framingham State on Saturday.

Reid Walker (WPI | So.|Lithia, Fla.): Walker averaged 13.5 points in a pair of tough tests to open NEWMAC play. The sophomore netted 10 points at MIT before scoring a game-high 17 at Babson College.

WACBA Men’s Player of the Week: Kareem Davis (Becker College | Sr.|Lowell, Mass.): Davis matched his career-high with 34 points in a heroic effort as Becker fell 74-71 to visiting Worcester State last Tuesday evening. The senior team captain also added six assists, two steals and three rebounds. With his jumper off, Davis took it right at the Lancers’ defense, going 12 of 13 from the line. The Hawks will break for the holidays and return to competition on Thursday, Jan. 3 at UMass Dartmouth.

Hassell WEB WACBA WACBA Men’s Rookie of the Week: Eddie Hassell (Worcester State | Fr. | Milton, Mass.): Hassell closed out the first semester by scoring 11 points in 23 minutes, while tallying three rebounds, two blocks and one steal in a three-point win over Becker College.

Men’s Basketball Honor Roll

Branislav Vujadinovic (Assumption College | Jr. | Belgrade, Serbia): Vujadinovic posted his first double-double of the season last Saturday when the Hounds fell to Chestnut Hill, 59-56. The junior scored 16 points with a season-high ten rebounds, two assists and three steals to lead Assumption in the contest.

Bobby Perette (Anna Maria College | Jr. | Marshfield, Mass.): Perette averaged 15.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and one steal in a pair of setbacks last week against Lesley University and Mitchell College. The junior guard began the week with a 17 point performance against the Lynx, while adding three rebounds and one swipe before registering 14 points, four caroms and one steal against Mitchell.

Kameron Jimenez-Fox (Fitchburg State | Jr. | Boston, Mass.): Jimenez-Fox posted a double-double of 26 points and 12 rebounds, along with as three assists, one steal and one block in a 73-65 victory over Castleton University last Tuesday in the Falcons’ lone contest of the week.

Shaun McCarthy (Worcester State | Jr. | Oxford, Mass.): McCarthy recorded a season-high 32 points in a narrow 74-71 win over Becker College last Tuesday. McCarthy was 13-for-20 from the floor, but also secured eight rebounds, while adding a pair of assists and one steal.

Garrett Stephenson (WPI | So. | Townsend, Mass.): Stephenson notched his second consecutive double-double of the season, this time with 18 points and 11 rebounds to help WPI remain perfect with an 86-71 win over Husson on Sunday. The sophomore scored six of 12 second-half points and hauled in six of his eight second-half rebounds during the decisive 26-5 run by the Engineers.
