Another busy week of college basketball in the Worcester area is in the books, which means it is time to unveil our thirteenth and final Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) Men’s Honor Roll for the 2019-20 season.

Noontime Sports is proud to partner with WACBA for the seventh consecutive season to host the weekly honor roll, which will be seen every Tuesday throughout the current college basketball season. Each week, we will select a player and rookie of the week, as well as highlight various milestones, too.

Wentworth and Nichols College

Men’s Basketball Player of the Week: DeAnte Bruton (Nichols College | Sr. | New London, Conn.): Bruton averaged 38 points in three games while netting 114 points for the week as the Bison clinched their fourth-straight Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) title this past weekend against Endicott College. Bruton scored the game-winning basket with 1.3 seconds remaining in last Tuesday in a quarterfinal win over Roger Williams, poured in a career-high 40 points in his team’s semifinal match-up against Gordon College, and then finished the week with a 38-point, 14-rebounds effort against Endicott. Bruton knocked down 12-of-14 freebies on Saturday in the CCC Championship and finished the tournament with 11.3 rebounds per game while going 27-of-31 from the charity stripe.


Men’s Rookie of the Week: Sam Dion (Worcester State | Fr. | Barre, Mass.): Dion averaged 14.0 points per game in Worcester State’s Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Tournament run last week, which included a 24-point performance against MCLA in the semifinals last Thursday. His four-point play in the final minute of the MASCAC Championship against Westfield State cut Worcester’s deficit from five points to one point with 58 seconds remaining in the second half.


Men’s WACBA Honor Roll | Tuesday, March 3rd, 2020

Nicholas Tracy (Nichols College | Sr. | Indianapolis, Ind.): Tracy posted a game-best 26 points, eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block in an 80-78 quarterfinal round setback last Tuesday to the Trailblazers for MCLA.

Chris Cardoso (Worcester State | Jr. | Jamaica Plain, Mass.): Cardoso recorded a pair of double-doubles in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Tournament last week, which helped the Lancers secure a spot in the title game for the first time in four seasons. Cardoso averaged 20.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game while shooting 60 percent from the floor and 57 percent from three.

Garrett Stephenson (WPI | Jr. |Townsend, MA): Stephenson averaged 21 points and eight rebounds during a 1-1 week for the Crimson and Gray. The junior center posted 16 points and five rebounds in a semifinal victory over Babson College before delivering a double-double with 26 points and 11 boards in the championship game against Coast Guard.

Roger Williams and Nichols College

Men’s Basketball Player of the Week: Jaekwon Spencer (Nichols College | Soph. | Bristol, Conn.): Spencer averaged 27 points while shooting 64 percent from the field to lead the Bison to a pair of wins and help secure the second seed in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament. He opened the week with a 29-point, five-rebound, four-steal, three-assist effort at Roger Williams on Wednesday before falling one rebound shy of a double-double with 25 points and nine boards against Gordon College this past Saturday. Over his last six games – all Nichols wins – Spencer is averaging 21.8 points per game.


Men’s Rookie of the Week: Sam Dion (Worcester State | Fr. | Barre, Mass.): Dion helped the Lancers secure a share of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) crown last week for the first time in 20 seasons. The first-year guard averaged 19 points per game in two contests last week while converting 6-of-12 three-point attempts. He also averaged 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals, and 2.5 assists per game.


Men’s WACBA Honor Roll | Tuesday, February 25th, 2020

Bobby Perette (Anna Maria College| Sr.| Marshfield, Mass.): Perette etched his name in the Anna Maria College men’s basketball record book this past weekend by becoming the program’s all-time three-point field goal leader with 217 made trifectas while averaging 20 points in a pair of games. The senior guard, who has connected on 217 of 596 three-point attempts in four seasons with the AMCATs, edged Jeff Padula (214 made three-pointers) for the top spot in the category by sinking four trifectas against Albertus Magnus. Perette concluded his team’s outing against the Falcons with 25 points after netting just 15 four days earlier in a setback to St. Joseph (Conn.).

Branislav Vujadinovic (Assumption College | Sr. | Belgrade, Serbia): Vujadinovic hit two three-pointers in the last minute of regulation to force an overtime period at Bentley University last Wednesday evening. The Hounds came out victorious, thanks to Vujadinovic, who concluded the conference clash with 19 points, five assists and a pair of steals.

Mateus Ribeiro (Becker College | Jr. | Sao Paulo, Brazil): Ribeiro led Becker to a 79-70 win over Lesley on Saturday, scoring 18 points with seven rebounds, four assists, and a steal. The junior team captain has led the Hawks this season in scoring, rebounding, assists, and steals.

Nicholas Tracy (Fitchburg State | Sr. | Indianapolis, Ind.): Tracy averaged 20.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and one steal per contest for the Falcons over two games. He notched 22 points, six boards, two assists and one steal in a 79-77 setback to Worcester State on Thursday before adding 19 points, nine caroms, three assists, one steal and one block in a 93-72 triumph over Framingham State on Saturday.

Garrett Stephenson (WPI | Jr. | Townsend, Mass.): Stephenson was a rebound away from averaging a double-double as he totaled 37 points and 19 rebounds on 58.6 % shooting from the floor in a pair of games last week.

Men’s Basketball Player of the Week: Biko Gayman (Clark University | Jr. | Fort Pierce, Fla.): Gayman averaged 24 points, six rebounds, and four assists in a pair of games last week for the Cougars. The junior guard began the week netting 27 points in a six-point setback to MIT before tallying 21 points against Springfield College. He registered seven assists, five rebounds, and one steal against the Engineers before recording seven rebounds against the Pride. Gayman has now netted 20 points or more in 11 contests this season.


Men’s Rookie of the Week: Sam Dion (Worcester State | Fr. | Barre, Mass.): In a 1-1 week for the Lancers, Dion averaged 15 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and three steals. Against Baruch, the first-year guard produced 19 points to go with four rebounds (three defensive caroms), four steals, and one block. Two days later against Bridgewater State, Dion registered 11 points on 4 of 6 shooting along with three defensive caroms and two assists.

Men’s Basketball Milestone: Bobby Perette (Anna Maria College | Sr. | Marshfield, Mass.): Perette averaged 20 points and three rebounds in back-to-back games last week for the AMCATs. He eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in a one-point setback to Colby-Sawyer last Saturday to bump his total to 1,009 points in 87 contests. The Marshfield, Massachusetts native concluded the game with 19 points, five rebounds, two steals, and one assist. Prior to netting his 1,000th career point, the senior guard posted 21 points, one rebound, and one assist in a 95-82 setback to Emmanuel College.


Men’s WACBA Honor Roll | Tuesday, February 4th, 2020

Guney Kilitcioglu (Becker College | Jr.| Istanbul, Turkey): Kilitcioglu had a standout week for the Hawks, averaging 8.5 points per game over two games on 55.6 percent shooting. The junior transfer also averaged 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 blocks per game.

Erik Bjorn (Worcester State | Jr. | Holden, Mass.): In his lone outing of the week against Bridgewater State, the junior forward recorded a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds to go with three assists, three steals, and two blocks. 

Jake Wisniewski (WPI | Sr. |West Brookfield, Mass.): The senior forward posted a season-high (and game-high) 23 points on 10 of 16 shooting to help WPI cap its week with an 86-73 win over Wheaton College last Saturday. Wisniewski also recorded 13 rebounds (seven defensive caroms) and four assists in the win after tallying just four points and three rebounds in 17 minutes against Springfield College three days earlier.
