Another week of college basketball in the Worcester area is in the books, which means it is time to unveil our second Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) Women’s Honor Roll for the 2019-20 season.

Noontime Sports is proud to sponsor with WACBA for the seventh consecutive season to host the weekly honor roll, which will be seen every Tuesday throughout the current college basketball season. Each week, we will select a player and rookie of the week, as well as highlight various milestones, too.

Women’s Player of the Week: Avery LaBarbera (Holy Cross | Soph. | Harrison, N.Y.): LaBarbera led the Crusaders in a 2-0 week by averaging 22 points and eight rebounds per game while also totaling 11 assists and seven steals and committing only one foul and one turnover. She went 7-for-12 (.583) from three-point range and shot .552 from the field. In the team’s 87-75 win against Bryant University last Wednesday, she netted 25 points — the second-highest total of her career — on 9-for-12 shooting with five assists, no turnovers, and three steals. In a 68-42 victory over Merrimack College this past Saturday, LaBarbera had the second double-double of her career with a 19-point, 10-rebound showing, along with six assists and four steals. LaBarbera currently ranks seventh in the nation with a 6.0 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Women’s Rookie of the Week: Monica Spain (Assumption College | Freshman | Braintree, Mass.): Spain guided the Hounds to an exciting home-opening win this past Saturday against Southern New Hampshire by netting 14 points on five of seven shooting, while sinking all four free throws. She ended the game with six rebounds (three offensive boards), four assists, and four steals. 


WACBA Women’s Basketball Milestone: Congratulations to Kerry Phayre, the coach of Assumption College women’s basketball, who earned her 400th win this past Saturday when the Greyhounds defeated Southern New Hampshire, 61-51.


Women’s WACBA Honor Roll | Tuesday, November 26th, 2019

Sienna Johnson (Anna Maria College | Sr. | Brockton, Mass.): Johnson tallied 37 points, five rebounds, five steals, and four assists in a 2-1 week for the AMCATs. She began the week with 18 points on 7 of 14 shooting in a 66-25 win over Lesley University before netting eight points in a 78-42 victory against Bay Path. She ended the week with 11 points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals in a 68-59 setback to Eastern Nazarene. 

Brianna Capacchione (Assumption College | Sr. | Washington Township, N.J.): Capacchione averaged 16.0 points this week while shooting 46.2 percent from the floor and 60.0 percent from beyond the arc. Capacchione recorded seven rebounds and two assists to go along with two steals and one block in her team’s home-opener win against Southern New Hampshire

Cassidy Harrison (Becker College | Senior | Foxborough, Mass.): Harrison scored 11 points with four rebounds and three steals at Emmanuel College on Friday, against one of the top teams in the country.

Samantha Maglione (Fitchburg State | Jr. | Bolton, Mass.): Maglion posted 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field as well as shooting 5-for-9 from beyond the arc with one rebound and one assist in an 87-71 setback to Albertus Magnus on Saturday afternoon.

Catherine Sweeney (Worcester State | Sr. | Lowell, Mass.): Sweeney was nearly perfect last week with a field goal percentage of 92.3 in the 1-1 week for Worcester State. Sweeney shot 6-for-6 for 13 points in a narrow loss to Western New England on Tuesday evening, before going 6-for-7 for 13 points in a come-from-behind victory over Keene State on Saturday.

Spencer Vinson (WPI | Sr. | Los Angeles, CA): Vinson posted a pair of double-doubles in two of three contests last week. The center erupted for 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds in WPI’s 60-41 road win at Fitchburg State last Thursday before completing her week with a 13-point, 10-rebound performance in a road loss at Regis College on Saturday.  The senior shot 50% from the field in both games.

Women’s Player of the Week: Lauren Manis (Holy Cross | Jr. | Franklin, Mass.): Manis recorded a pair of double-doubles in a 1-1 week for the Crusaders. In a loss to American last Wednesday, she recorded 19 points and 10 rebounds, along with four assists and two blocks. In a home victory on Saturday over Lafayette, she had 19 points and 11 rebounds and also scored the go-ahead basket in overtime. Mannis now has 16 double-doubles on the year – she is now tied for fifth-most in single-season program history.

Women’s Rookie of the Week: Bailey Savage (WPI | Fr. | Charlton, Mass.): Savage shot 59.1 percent (13-22) from the field, including 57.1 (8-14) from beyond the arc, in a 1-1 week. After tying her career high of 15 points at Coast Guard, the rookie went off for 20 in a setback to Babson College. In 34 minutes against the NEWMAC-leading Beavers, Savage was 7-10 (70%) and 5-8 (62.5%) with five 3-pointers.

Brittany Herring (Worcester State | Sr. | West Brookfield, Mass.): In a pair of wins last week for the Lancers, the senior forward averaged 17 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks. She began the week netting eight points of 4 of 7 shooting while recording five rebounds and one block in an exciting 56-55 win over Framingham State. Three days later against the Trailblazers of MCLA, Herring finished 10 of 10 from the field, while sinking six of seven attempts at the charity stripe for a game-high 26 points. Additionally, she totaled nine rebounds, three blocks, one assist, and one steal.

Sienna Johnson (Anna Maria College| Jr. | Brockton, Mass): In a pair of games last week for the AMCATs, Johnson averaged 14 points, two assists, one-and-a-half rebounds, and one steal. She netted 11 points or more in both games, including 17 points against St. Joseph’s (Conn.) last Saturday, while finishing the week four of eight from the charity stripe.

Maya Kerstetter (Clark University | Sr. | Northampton, Mass.): In her team’s lone contest last Wednesday against Mount Holyoke, Kerstetter recorded 17 points on 5 of 6 shooting, along with six rebounds (two offensive caroms), five steals and two assists in 32 minutes. Her impressive effort helped the Cougars race past Mount Holyoke College for an important league win.

Angelina Marazzi (Fitchburg State | Jr. | Manchester, N.H.): Marazzi averaged 28 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and one steal per contests in two games for the Falcons last week.  She netted a game-best 30 points, two rebounds and one assist in a 76-60 setback to Salem State on Wednesday before adding game-leading 26 points, five boards, four assists, and two steals in a 65-62 triumph over Pine Manor on Saturday.

Morgan O’Donnell (Assumption College | Sr. | Easton, Mass.): O’Donnell averaged 19.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game this week while shooting 50.0 percent from the floor and 76.9 percent from the foul line. She was the leading scorer for the Hounds in their 76-71 victory over Southern Connecticut with 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and a block in the game. O’Donnell then contributed 21 points and eight rebounds in Assumption’s matchup with Le Moyne on Saturday.

Sarah Ware (Becker College | Jr. | Oakham, Mass.): In Becker’s sole game of the week, Ware led the team to a 65-52 victory over Elms College on Saturday. She finished with 15 points while shooting six-of-seven from the floor, with two rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

WACBA Women’sPlayer of the Week: Kaitlyn Berkel (Worcester State | Sr. |Waterford, Conn.):Berkel put up 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds, three assists, and one steal in her team’s exciting 68-60 win over Springfield College last Tuesday.

Korbey HS WACBA Women’s Rookie of the Week: Calli Korbey (Worcester State | Fr. |Hopkinton, Mass.):Korbey netted 10 points, including a pair of triples, while tallying two assists and one steal in her team’s eight-point win over Springfield College last Tuesday.

Women’s Basketball Honor Roll

Morgan O’Donnell (Assumption College | Sr. | Easton, Mass.): O’Donnell posted a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds in just 16 minutes last Saturday in her team’s fifth-straight win over Caldwell University. The senior forward connected on 7 of 8 attempts from the floor, while sinking 4 of 6 free throws.

Hannah Favaloro (Clark University | Soph. | Blackstone, Mass.): Favaloro posted a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds in a 62-49 setback to Suffolk University last Tuesday. Favaloro has now posted six double-doubles this season, and is currently averaging 11.9 points and 11.0 rebounds per game.

Sienna Johnson (Anna Maria | Jr. | Brockton, Mass.): In her team’s lone contest last Thursday against Gordon College, the Brockton native tallied eight points, five rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Angelina Marazzi (Fitchburg State | Jr. | Manchester, N.H.): Marazzi collected 23 points, three rebounds, nine assists and six steals in a 76-71 setback to Regis College last Tuesday evening in the Falcons’ lone contest of the week.
