Daily Noontime: Tuesday, February 2, 2021

By Matt Noonan

Welcome to Tuesday, everyone!

And welcome to the morning after a nor’easter here in New England where some of us got no snow while others woke up to one or two feet of snow.

Speaking of the snow, Punxsutawney Phil has an announcement: there will be six more weeks of winter. Hooray!

Alright, enough about the snow. Let’s kickstart the day with a brand new Daily Noontime – as usual, be well, stay safe, and hold the line, everyone!

Tuesday’s Headlines (February 2, 2021)

  • Yesterday was an exciting day for Colin Cowherd, who launched The Volume in partnership with iHeartMedia.

This partnership will feature a library – well, more a podcast network of 2,000 hours of programing. Of course, Colin Cowherd will be the star because this is his network (and platform) he is launching, but there will be other shows hosted by LaJethro Jenkins and Dragonfly Jonez, along with a football program by Aqib Talib.

Colin Cowherd is not the first – well, more a “big-time” name to launch a new platform during the pandemic as John Skipper and Dan Le Batard announced earlier this year plans for their content company.
  • According to 247Sports.com, Overtime, which is known for its amazing highlights on social media, is planning to launch a semi-professional basketball league that will “provide compensation” for high school student-athletes.

More information will be announced later this month, but it appears the plan (as of this morning!) is to begin competition this September.
  • Dartmouth College announced last week plans to reinstate five of its athletic teams, which were cut last year to “increase flexibility in admissions and ease its budget deficit,” but there seemed to be a lot of tension between members of each program with Harry Sheehy, who is the school’s athletic director, and Tiffani-Dawn Sykes, who is the senior associate athletics director for varsity sports, during a recent one hour Zoom session.

The following programs have been reinstated at Dartmouth: men’s and women’s golf, men’s lightweight rowing, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving.
  • In an open letter on The Athletic, Andy Staples penned a noted – or should we say “memo?” – to incoming Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Commissioner, Jim Phillips, about adding Notre Dame to the league.
  • Tom Brady, who is gearing up for his tenth Super Bowl this week, is open to playing past the age of 45.
  • The Yale University men’s lacrosse team will not compete this spring due to “an insufficient number of players enrolled.”

News of the Bulldogs pulling the plug on their upcoming season came in an email from head coach Andy Shay to alumni of the program.

Finally, make sure to check out (and see) who made our Noontime Sports Small College Basketball Team of the Week, which we released last night!
