Mass. College Lax: Assumption’s Smith, Mack Set Records As Assumption Holds On For 15-14 Win Over AIC

Springfield, Mass. (April 5) — In a back-and-forth game on Saturday afternoon, the Assumption College men’s lacrosse team held off American International for a 15-14 road win at Abdow Field on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference play. Assumption built a 15-12 lead midway thru the fourth quarter before holding on for the one-goal victory.

In the victory, junior attack Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) became just the fifth player in Assumption history to reach the 100-point plateau for his career. He also became the Assumption College all-time career goals leader as he now has 94 for his career, breaking the previous mark of 91 held by Justin Cecil.

Assumption jumped out to an early 3-1 lead midway thru the first quarter as sophomore Connor Munisteri (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) had a pair of goals that included a man-up score with 7:49 left in the opening period. The Yellow jackets answered with a 5-0 scoring run however, led by a pair of goals each from both Bobby Spano and Eric Overdahl, to seize the 6-3 edge early in the second. The Hounds put together a 5-1 spurt of its own though to regain the lead at 8-7 on a goal by Munisteri that was assisted on by senior Ian Mack (Avon, Conn./Avon). Mack ended the game with seven assists, setting the Assumption College single-game record for assists as the previous mark of six had stood for nearly two decades.

Overdahl capped the first-half scoring with his third goal of the period as the teams headed into the halftime break tied up at 8-8. Justin Bard gave the Jackets a two-goal lead early in the third quarter and the hosts continued to lead at 12-11 with 4:19 remaining in the period after the 27th goal of the season from Bard.

Smith scored a man-up goal with just 1:10 left in the third that was assisted on by junior Paul Curran (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) as he sparked a 4-0 run that seemingly put the Hounds in control at 15-12 with 8:35 remaining in the game. Overdahl cut the deficit to two with 5:53 remaining, followed by a goal by Nick Amendt to make it a one-goal game with just 2:11 left. The Hounds hung on however to even their record at 5-5 overall with the team’s second straight win.

Junior Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) made 11 saves to pick up the victory, while Le Moyne’s Perry Booker had 15 stops in the loss.

Smith led the offense with four goals, along with three from Munisteri, two goals and three assists by Curran and the record-setting seven-assist game by Mack. Overdahl led the Yellow Jackets with five goals, along with four by Bard and three from Spano.

For the game, Assumption held a slight 38-36 edge in overall shots while forcing 17 American International turnovers. The Hounds were also very efficient in man-up offense and man-down defense in a game that featured 17 total penalties. Assumption converted 6-of-10 man-up chances, while holding the Yellow Jackets to just one goal in seven opportunities.

Assumption also held a 19-12 edge in faceoffs won as sophomore Nick Guarino (Avon, Conn./Avon) won 19-of-31 attempts. The Yellow Jackets had the 16-12 advantage in ground balls in the game, including 8-4 in the first half of play.

With the win, Assumption is now 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the Northeast-10, while American International falls to 1-11 overall and 1-8 in league play.

Assumption is back in action on Tuesday, April 8th as the team hosts Adelphi University for a 7 p.m. start. The game is also the Wounded Warrior Project game for the Hounds as the team looks to raise money for this worthy cause.

Mass. College Lax: Assumption Pulls Away For 13-8 Victory Over Saint Michael’s

Worcester, Mass. (March 29) — Led by a five-goal effort by junior Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa), the Assumption College men’s lacrosse defeated visiting Saint Michael’s College by a 13-8 final in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Multi-Sport Stadium on a rainy Saturday afternoon.

Assumption jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, started by an unassisted goal by senior captain Ian Mack (Avon, Conn./Avon) just 2:22 into the game. Juniors Ty Martina (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) and Paul Curran (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) tallied two goals within a span of just 49 seconds before the Purple Knights cut the lead down to 3-2 with a pair of tallies just 30 seconds apart. Junior Matt Dromeshauser got the visitors on the board at the 4:53 mark, followed by a goal from senior Asa Sargent as both goals were assisted on by senior Evan Antolino. Smith and St. Mike’s senior Cooper Quenneville traded goals over the remainder of the period as the Hounds held a 4-3 edge after one quarter.

The Hounds seized control in the second behind two goals from Smith and two assists from Curran for an 8-4 halftime lead. Shots in the first half were even at 20-20, but the Hounds were much more accurate as the hosts held a 16-9 edge in shots on goal. Assumption held a 9-5 edge in first-half faceoffs, as well as a 21-18 advantage in ground balls. Both teams were perfect in their clear attempts, led by Assumption converting a perfect 8-for-8 in the half.

In a penalty-ridden second half that saw five combined man-up goals between the two teams, Assumption led by as many as six goals on two occasions as the Hounds pulled away for the win. The first six-goal lead came just 2:36 into the third quarter as Smith and Curran opened up the half with man-up scores for a 10-4 advantage. Antolino and Sargent answered with a pair of Purple Knight goals in a span of 39 seconds to make it a 10-6 game with 10:57 left in the period, but junior Tim Casey (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) ended that run with his fifth goal of the year with 7:27 on the clock.

Assumption took the 11-6 lead into the final quarter, which started with the fifth goal of the day Smith as he scored man-up for the 12-6 lead. Saint Michael’s answered with man-up goals from Antolino and senior Tim McDonald, before Martina closed out the scoring at 5:28 with his third goal of the game to complete the hat trick and the 13-8 victory.

Junior goalie Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) had eight saves in the win for Assumption, while senior Andrew Landers turned aside 14 shots while taking the loss.

With Smith’s five-goal outing, he now sits at 99 points for his career as he is on the verge of becoming the fifth 100-point scorer in Assumption history. He also has 90 career goals, which is just one shy of tying the Assumption all-time career goal mark that is held by Justin Cecil ’96. Curran ended the game with four points on two goals and two assists, along with one goal and two assists from Casey

For the Purple Knights, Antolino had two goals and two assists to go along with two goals and one assist by Sargent.

For the game, Assumption had a 14-10 edge in faceoffs behind a great effort by sophomore Nick Guarino (Avon, Conn./Avon). Ground balls ended up 35-24 in favor of the Hounds, led by five in the game by Guarino. Each team was unsuccessful on just one clear attempt in the contest, led by an 18-for-19 effort by Assumption as the Hounds also forced 19 Purple Knight turnovers.

With the win, the Hounds improve to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the Northeast-10, while the Purple Knights drop to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in league play.

Assumption is back in action on Saturday, April 5th as the Hounds travel to American International College for a 4 p.m. start.

Mass. College Lax: Assumption Tops Bentley On Senior Day, 7-6

Worcester, Mass. (April 13) — On Saturday afternoon, the Assumption College men’s lacrosse team held off a late Bentley University rally for a 7-6 victory over the Falcons on Senior Day at the Multi-Sport Stadium. The win is just the second Assumption win over the Falcons in the all-time series.

Prior to the game, seniors Casey Marren (Derby, Conn./Notre Dame), Connor MacNeil (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) and Pat Trainor (Webster, Mass./Saint John’s) were honored as part of the 2013 Senior Day ceremony.

Assumption jumped on top just 2:28 into the game as sophomore Ty Martina (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) tallied his ninth goal of the season, off an assist from MacNeil. Freshman Connor Munisteri (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) extended the lead out to 2-0 on his first goal of the season just 40 seconds later. The Falcons answered though with even-strength goals from Bobby Hinds and Tim Matheson to tie the game at 2-2 with four minutes left in the quarter. Sophomore Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y/East Syracuse Minoa) put the Hounds back in front 13 seconds later as he fired a shot from the left side for his 19th goal of the season. The score was set up by a faceoff win by freshman Nick Guarino (Avon, Conn./Avon) as he picked up the ground ball and fired the pass to a streaking Smith for the goal. Nick Astarita tied the game again on his sixth goal of the season to make it a 3-3 margin after one.

The second quarter was all Greyhounds as Assumption received goals from Martina, sophomore Peter Gersbeck (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and Munisteri to outscore the Falcons by a 3-1 margin in the period for the 6-4 halftime lead.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Smith pushed Assumption ahead to its biggest lead of the game at 7-4 with 11:29 left in the game. Matt Dente cut the lead down to 7-5 with 8:08 left before Dan Keefer scored his first goal of the season to cut the edge down to just one with 50 seconds left. Assumption regained possession and called timeout with 16 seconds left before killing off the remaining seconds for the one-goal win.

Smith, Martina and Munisteri each posted two goals, along with two assists from junior Ian Mack (Avon, Conn./Avon). For Bentley, six different players found the back of the net, along with six separate players recording an assist.

Assumption was nearly perfect in clear attempts, clearing 18 of 19 attempts. Ground balls were even at 28 each, while Bentley held a 9-6 edge in faceoffs.

Sophomore goalie Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) made nine saves in the win, while Jarrod Dillon turned aside eight shots in the loss.

With the win, the Hounds improve to 2-8 overall and 2-6 in Northeast-10 play, while the Falcons fall to 2-7 overall and 2-6 in the league.

Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, April 17th as the Hounds play host to Pace University for a 4 p.m. start at the Multi-Sport Stadium.

Mass. College Lax: Assumption Men’s Earns First Win

Courtesy of the Assumption College sports information department, here’s yesterday’s release from the men’s lacrosse game. The Greyhounds picked up their first win of the season by defeating American International, 10-8. Here’s the recap:

Worcester, Mass. (April 6) — Led by a hat trick from sophomore Ty Martina (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) and a 13-save effort from goalie Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass.), the Assumption College men’s lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season with a 10-8 victory over visiting American International College on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Assumption improves to 1-7 overall and 1-5 in the Northeast-10. The victory is also the first win at Assumption for first-year head coach Keith Loftis.

Sophomore John Greco (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) got the Hounds on the board just 56 seconds into the opening quarter for the 1-0 lead. The majority of the period was controlled by the Yellow Jackets though as the visitors outshot Assumption by a 12-6 margin in the quarter. Zak Guenther got the scoring started for AIC as he tied the game at 1-1 with 5:13 left in the period. Sophomore Bobby Spano scored an even-strength goal just 1:09 later to take the lead, followed by a man-up goal from Spano with just 1:48 on the clock for the 3-1 margin after one.

The Hounds quickly tied things up in the second as the first of Martina’s three goals came with 11:57 left in the half. Senior Connor MacNeil (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) tied the game at 3-3, but that was short-lived as the Yellow Jackets scored twice in just over a minute to regain control at 5-3. The Hounds inched closer in the final minutes of the half as sophomore Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) took a pass from sophomore Tim Casey (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) for his 17th goal of the season and a 5-4 halftime score.

After Spano extended the lead back to 6-4, the Hounds put together a three-goal scoring run and eventually took the lead at 7-6 with 10:20 left in the third on the second goal of the game from MacNeil. Spano tied the game for a final time with three minutes left in the third before Martina put Assumption ahead to stay on a diving goal with 50 seconds remaining in the period.

Sophomore Peter Gersbeck (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) scored twice in the first four minutes of the final quarter to extend the lead to 10-7 as the Hounds came away with the eventual 10-8 win. Spano scored his fifth and final goal of the game with 1:39 left to account for the final scoring margin.

While Contento made 13 saves for the Hounds in the win, American International netminders Roger LeDoux and Alexis Buque combined for 11 stops in the loss.

Assumption won 12-of-21 faceoffs in the game, all of which were won by freshman Nick Guarino (Avon, Conn./Avon). The Hounds were effective in clears as well, converting 13-of-15 chances while forcing seven AIC turnovers on clear attempts as the Yellow Jackets converted just 8-of-15 opportunities. Assumption held a 45-42 edge in ground balls, led by a team-high six each from Contento and Guarino. Senior Pat Trainor (Webster, Mass./Saint John’s) led the Hounds with a pair of caused turnovers as five different players forced Yellow Jacket turnovers.

Spano led all goal scorers for AIC with five goals, while Guenther posted two goals and two assists in the defeat. The Yellow Jackets were also effect in their man-up offense, converting 2-of-3 opportunities, which all came in the opening half of play.

Assumption is back in action on Tuesday, April 9 as the Hounds travel to Adelphi University for a 4 p.m. start in Garden City, N.Y. The Panthers are ranked No. 2 in this week’s USILA Division II National Poll.

With the loss, American International falls to 2-9 overall and remains winless in Northeast-10 play at 0-7.
