BURRILLVILLE, R.I. – Assumption College evened the score with a shorthanded goal at 9:24 by Brennen Shaw before Worcester State University answered with a strike from Cody Brier, his first collegiate goal, which gave the Lancers a 2-1 victory.
With the win, Worcester State earned a spot in the Worcester City Shootout Tournament Championship for the second consecutive season. The Lancers will face Becker College, a squad that defeated them last January in the title match, 4-3.
Assumption College outshot Worcester State, 31-21, but the Lancers managed to win 34-of-59 face-offs.
The Ice Dogs finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Lancers ended 0-for-2.
Worcester State’s Conor Matsen lit the lamp for the first time as a collegiate player at 14:59 in the first period, which provided the home squad a lead for two periods.
Worcester State advanced to 1-6 on the season, while Assumption College falls to 1-8.
