Worcester City Shootout Tournament: Worcester State 2, Assumption 1 (Game Summary)

BURRILLVILLE, R.I. – Assumption College evened the score with a shorthanded goal at 9:24 by Brennen Shaw before Worcester State University answered with a strike from Cody Brier, his first collegiate goal, which gave the Lancers a 2-1 victory.

With the win, Worcester State earned a spot in the Worcester City Shootout Tournament Championship for the second consecutive season. The Lancers will face Becker College, a squad that defeated them last January in the title match, 4-3.

Assumption College outshot Worcester State, 31-21, but the Lancers managed to win 34-of-59 face-offs.

The Ice Dogs finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Lancers ended 0-for-2.

Worcester State’s Conor Matsen lit the lamp for the first time as a collegiate player at 14:59 in the first period, which provided the home squad a lead for two periods.

Worcester State advanced to 1-6 on the season, while Assumption College falls to 1-8.

Worcester City Shootout Tournament: Worcester State 1, Assumption 0 (Second Period Summary)

BURRILLVILLE, R.I. – Assumption College had their chances to even the score in the second period, but missed opportunities on two power plays allowed Worcester State to skate off the ice with 1-0 advantage after 40 minutes.

The Ice Dogs outshot the Lancers, 13-6 in the middle period, but couldn’t find the back of their opponent’s cage.

Assumption’s Bobby Bowdoin has saved 14 shots through two periods, while Worcester State’s Salvatore Tecci has recorded 22 saves.

BURRILLVILLE, R.I. – In the second game of the Worcester City Shootout Tournament, Worcester State earned a lead late in the first period when Mike Leskun and Joe White connected with Conor Matsen, who registered his first collegiate goal at 14:59, which gave the Lancers a 1-0 lead over Assumption College prior to the first intermission.

The Lancers and Ice Dogs traded a few shots following the opening faceoff, but it wasn’t until a rush late in the period by the Lancers offense that resulted in the goal.

Both squads registered nine shots on net and no penalty minutes.
